This is the tonal cover I did for X-Factor #43. I wanted something a little softer than just bold B&W ink for this, so I decided to use some water soluble graphite pencils, ink wash, and some white acrylic highlights.

The final coloured version is here: [link]

X-FACTOR #43
Written by PETER DAVID
Penciled by VALENTINE DE LANDRO
Cover by DAVID YARDIN

X-Factor draws one step closer to determining who is targeting former mutants for death...but the answer may wind up hitting too close to home. Meanwhile, Cyclops has a very particular mission that could spell the end for Madrox and his new partner. And Rictor finds himself in a battle to the death with...nah. Why ruin the surprise?

is it something you really have to do or is it something you choose to do?

how important are the details until then?

Stylistically I just like putting lots of detail in. I guess I also like to control the finished art as much as possible, so the more I put in, the less chance there is (if somebody else works over my art) that they will screw it up.

I see your point of view,I've seen a lot of of wonderful works screwed by some guy who doesn't exactly respect the intended work.I've seen so much of it with lot's of John Buscema's works,no wonder why he himself were always his best inker.

Beautiful work on this cover. Looking at the uncolored version. I think this could of been a great cover as is, without the color work.
I'm looking forward to see if you ever do a cover of X-factor with Ruby Summers on it. Besides the extraordinarily corny name she's been given seeing how her name is Ruby and she has ruby quartz skin. I think her character is very well designed.
I bet a cover of both Ruby and the current time line Emma, her mother, with both in their bejeweled forms could make for a very cool looking cover image.
