Seem to be getting quite a few of these sort of questions lately, so some answers...

*No, I don't work for free, I draw for a living.

*No, I'm not interested in helping you make your creator owned graphic novel. If I'm going to do creator owned it will be my own project.

*Private commission details are on my website [link] but my list is currently closed.

*I really don't  have time to answer broad art questions like, "can you give me tips on drawing?" Be more specific.

*I don't have time to do every gallery feedback request I get. I only give in depth critiques when I have the time, and feel like doing it.

I imagine you get a lot of this.. I'm just now getting into this seriously and a lot of creators assume that means I'm an easy target since I need the "experience". There's a few that even make good money selling the books they get done and still they offer nothing but a smile. Thanks for everything you do.

this is pretty funny. I never looked at it this way, but would have to agree with you. I think its nice when people asked for a commssion, or logo, tattoo, or to draw a family member for their birthday, which i get asked all of these all the time. But when they ask to do it for free, or if you give them a quote and they look at you like theyre offended by the price (which im told i underprice my work), i think it actually becomes offensive. This is our JOB! lol.

maybe next time we should reply with, ok i will, if you come clean my house and mow the lawn haha.

If only we could get this message out to the general public.
We once had an issue like this on craig's list where a t-shirt company wanted an artist to create a catalogue of illustrations for a t-shirt line.
They wanted to pay $5 for over 100 drawings.
They bailed on me when I brought out my contracts. The next artist left a wonderfuly long message on Craig's list just to let them know what's up.
I's sad that art is soooooo under appreciated in this country. People act like everyone can do what we do and that's not even close to the truth.

This country too... I think for the most part worldwide.

I'm sorry to say this, because I really enjoy your work and understand that answering the same questions repeatedly can be frustrating, but I find this journal entry to be quite rude. You are a successful and talented artist and people, whether their questions annoy you or not, look up to you and admire what you do. If you feel as though you're answering the same questions over and over again, then don't answer them. As for the requests for you to work on someone's creator owned project, just say no. I think 9 times out of 10 people just want to make a connection with someone that they admire and aspire to be like. When people have as much talent as you do I think it's important to stay humble and be grateful for your gift as well as for those who support it. This journal entry sounds aggressive, arrogant and unappreciative. Just my perspective of course.

People can take this journal entry however they want, but if you're getting a rude vibe from the answers, it's probably me reacting to how rudely some people are phrasing their questions. For instance, I find it highly insulting for people to ask a professional person they don't know, to do work for free, or for back end payments. I don't care how it's asked, it is flat out rude and insulting.

Aggressive? I don't think so... tone can be misconstrued sometimes online... I am definitely being blunt in my answers though. Arrogant? I don't think I acted as such in any of the above. Unappreciative? Well I don't appreciate some of the questions I've been getting, or more accurately how they are being asked, but I do appreciate my fans, and go out of my way to answer just about every positive, or negative, question/comment I get on here, even if it's with a simple "thank you" (as you can probably see from all my deviation comments). I just wish people would use a little more common sense and courtesy about asking these sorts of requests, not just from me, but any professional.

I appreciate you responding to my comment. I guess, as a fan of yours, I just felt... well, a little let down and wanted to make you aware that your post seemed a little impulsive and fueled by frustration. Your response to my comment made a lot of sense, and I can see a little more clearly where you are coming from.

It doesn't surprise me when you get those. It surprises me when I get those q's (except for the drawing tips) because I'm not as good and don't draw for a living. Folks just want free stuff.

Everyone wants free stuff, but not everyone asks.
